Building Self-Worth: Strategies for Confidence and Self-Care

There was a fantastic quote a while ago on Instagram, and I can't for the life of me remember her name, but I believe she is a Black businesswoman (if you know her, please let me know so I can appropriately credit her).

She said something to the effect of, "2022 taught me to stop aspiring to sit at tables where I have to bring my own chair, squeeze in between folks, and repeatedly convince others why I should be there. I learned to build a new table. I hope you learned the same.” 

This hit me hard, and I wanted to take today to talk about this.

The key to this quote for me really is self-worth. Knowing your value and showing up with that is a non-negotiable wherever you are in your life, whether at the bargaining table in business or out for an evening with friends. Many of us don't see (or have been taught not to see) our inherent worth, so we show up and try to prove our worth to ourselves and everyone around us everywhere we go. We try to sit at these tables and convince people we deserve to be there, but when we see and know our inherent worth we don't need to try and prove anything. We build our own table and hopefully invite others to that table so they can see their own worth as well. But it's not always that easy, is it?

We all struggle with self-worth in our lives. It's a common issue that affects everyone at some point. Whether it's due to societal pressures, personal experiences, or something else entirely, feeling unworthy can be a debilitating emotion that impacts every aspect of our lives. However, it's important to know that you are inherently valuable and deserve to be treated with respect and kindness. One way to start feeling more worthy is through daily self-care practices. This can include anything from taking a walk outside, practicing meditation, or enjoying a cup of tea. We are less likely to tolerate mistreatment or settle for less than we deserve. By valuing ourselves, we attract positive relationships and experiences that reflect our worthiness. These relationships in turn help us see our worth and help us continue to live our lives in our inherent worthiness.
