How-to: Dumbbell Chest Press - A Beginner-Friendly Floor Variation
Aug 20, 2026How do you do a dumbbell chest press with good form?
The chest press is a simple, effective way to build upper-body strength—and you don't necessarily need a weight bench to do it.
In today's How-To, I'm demonstrating a dumbbell floor chest press, which lets you practise the pressing movement while the floor gives you a clear stopping point for your upper arms.
Chest presses primarily work your chest (pectorals), with your triceps and shoulders helping with the movement. Building strength here can also support everyday pushing movements—because strength training isn't just about what we can lift at the gym. It's about making everyday life easier, too.
How to do a floor chest press
Start lying comfortably on your back, engage your abs, and keep your knees bent with your feet supported.
Hold a dumbbell in each hand and bring your arms into a comfortable pressing position.
From there:
- Press the weights upward with control.
- Keep your wrists comfortably stacked rather than letting them collapse backward.
- Lower slowly until your upper arms gently meet the floor.
- Keep the movement smooth rather than bouncing off the floor.
- Choose a weight that lets you stay in control.
And remember: your arms don't have to make a perfect 90-degree angle. Shoulder structure, mobility, and comfort vary from person to person.
Myth vs. Reality
Myth: Your elbows have to be directly out to the sides for a chest press to "count."
Reality: A slightly tucked arm position is often more comfortable. Your ideal position depends on your body, your range of motion, and what feels strong and controlled for you.
Remember...
Good strength training isn't about making your movement look exactly like somebody else's.
It's about finding a position where you can move comfortably, maintain control and gradually build strength.
We don't force your body into the movement - we fit the movement to your body.
