Motivation Monday - Breaking Habits

“Old habits take years to form. Forgive yourself if it takes more than a day to break them,” Mel Robbins

We all have habits we'd prefer not to, and when I'm speaking with my coaching clients, one of the biggest things we talk about is that habits are like driving a cart along the same dirt road over and over.

After a while, the cart wheels begin to create ruts in the road, making it easier to follow that same path again and again.

But, when we can to get out of that habit, that "rut", it requires us to take that cart out of the tracks, so to speak, which can take tremendous effort and time. 

It's easy for those cart wheels to again fall back into those ruts, those old habits come back before we even realize.

This is where mindfulness comes in, and a hefty dose of empathy.

When you are trying to remove a "bad" habit, give yourself time and grace to do it.

When you notice you've fallen back into the old ways that you are trying to eliminate, give yourself a pause.

Notice that you've noticed the old habits creeping back in, that's really the first step, and it's huge!

Give yourself credit for noticing, and allow yourself empathy at that moment - you're trying to change those ruts, and it takes time and effort.

Figure out how to get back into your new habits as soon as you can, without shaming yourself for going back to the hold ones.

Get back on your new habit track, and celebrate every second you're there.

The empathy part of backsliding is the best way to continue to move forward in your new habits.
