How to Safely Do Beginner Overhead Press for Stronger Arms and Shoulders
Aug 13, 2026The overhead press is one of the best exercises for building shoulder strength, improving upper body stability and making everyday activities—like putting dishes away or lifting groceries—feel easier.
But it's also a movement that's often done with too much weight, too much speed or by arching the lower back or chest.
In today's How-To video, I'll show you a simple overhead press variation that focuses on good posture, controlled movement and shoulder strength.
Why try the Overhead Press?
✅ Strengthens your shoulders
✅ Builds upper body strength
✅ Improves shoulder stability
✅ Helps with everyday lifting tasks
✅ Encourages better posture
Remember...
• Stand (or kneel) tall.
• Keep your ribs from flaring forward, glutes & abs engaged, pelvis neutral.
• Press the weight overhead with control.
• Lower slowly.
• Breathe throughout the movement.
Myth vs. Reality
Myth: Heavier weights always lead to better results.
Reality: Good technique and controlled movement will almost always give you better long-term results than simply lifting heavier.
Remember...
We don't force your body into the movement—we fit the movement to your body.
