Wellness Wednesday - 5 Basics of Self Care Explained

Feb 15, 2023

Last week you got an overview of what the 5 Basics of Self Care are.

Today, we go into detail, giving you a more thorough look at how this can actually look in your daily life.

Remember the basics?

Nutrition.

Hydration.

Sleep.

Exercise,

Treating Yourself.

Now, we'll go into more detail. Self care is not just about chocolate cake and bubble baths by candle light, it's about little things each day that you do to keep yourself healthy - physically and mentally.

It's about daily acts of love and respect, so that you aren't taking care of everyone and everything else first, and giving yourself whatever is left.

Self care is about putting yourself first, not only. It's not selfish or conceited or self-centred to ensure that you are healthy and well enough to thrive through your days. Self care is the very foundation to ensure you are well enough to help others, get the things done each day that need to be done, as well as the things you want and love to do.

If you're looking for hydration guidance, here is a hint:

If you take your bodyweight in pounds, and divide it in four, or in half, that's a range of about how many fluid ounces you'll need per day. If you weigh in kilograms, you're looking at multiplying your weight in kilos (round up or down to a kilo) by 0.033, or 0.055  So, for example, a person weighing 145 pounds would need about 36-72 ounces at a minimum.

If you are at higher altitude, in a dry environment, or are exerting yourself, you will need to keep that in mind and probably drink more.

If you are about 45kg (about 145lbs), you would need about 1.5L - 2.5L per day at a minimum. If you are at higher altitude, in a dry environment, or are exerting yourself, you will need to keep that in mind and probably drink more.

What needs to be accounted for is that different people need different amounts of water. So, if you aren't drinking any water at all, start to increase this to the minimum throughout the course of the day, and this week.

**This is not a substitute for medical advice, ask your doctor if you have a medical condition or are unsure.**
